The VIN for the early MGB, approximately , may be found stamped on a plate that is secured to the inner right hand fender looking from the rear of the car , located just in front of the radiator. The VIN for the later MGB, approximately to , may be found stamped on a plate secured to the left hand door post, and on a plate secured to the top of the dashboard. In addition to the stamped plates shown above, there are other places where the VIN is stamped: Starting with about car , the VIN was stamped into the right front frame rail on cars for the North American market. This continued through the end of production. Starting in late , the number was also stamped on the right rear frame rail in the trunk.

The chassis number is the key data for identifying your car. On all T-types it is stamped on the near-side dumb-iron or chassis extension. Some historians might dispute this, but it seems that the prototype TAs were numbered and , while the prototype TB and TC were numbered and were not counted as production cars. This latter is also called the Mark II and hence often confused with the code TD2, which formed part of the engine codes of cars produced after about chassis number , and signifying a larger clutch.
